Chapter Seven

Ethan rolled to his back, carrying Nicole with him. Her legs straddled his thighs as she grabbed his shorts and yanked them down. She was so wild and beautiful, her blue eyes ablaze with passionate fire. A part of him hated the fact that she would have sex with Ethan so willingly, but he quickly shoved that jealousy aside. He refused to be jealous of himself.
He lifted his hips from the sand and helped her to remove his shorts, allowing his throbbing cock free. Her small fingers wrapped around his hard shaft and he groaned, his hips bucking upward. God, he wanted her. Her teeth nipped at his sac, the balls tightening further, making his jaw clench. In silence he watched her slide her tongue upward along his cock to circle the purple head. Her pink tongue flicked out to lick the pre-cum from the tip and he thought he’d lose it.
“Damn it, Nicole.” He ground his teeth in frustration as she slowly circled him again before enveloping his aching shaft within the warmth of her mouth.
“God damn it, woman.” He quickly grabbed her shoulders and tugged her up his body. Her pussy slid along his cock, coating it with her hot juices, making him shudder in need. “Take me inside you, Nicole. Fuck me with your pussy.”
She raised her hips, positioning the head of his cock at her wet opening. Heat engulfed him like a glove as his cock slid deep, encased to his balls. Nicole arched her back, her breasts jutted outward, and he reached out to massage the firm mounds. Her moans spurred him on as he pinched and pulled at her hard nipples.
Her hips rocked against him, each movement taking him deeper into her body. Moving his fingers down her ribs and firm stomach, he toyed with her pubic hair. She moaned and moved back a little more, resting her hands behind her on his thighs, her fingernails digging into his new flesh.
He didn’t care. She could rip it from him if she wanted. He was right where he wanted to be, forever.
Moving between her legs, he brushed his thumb across her clit. She shuddered, the sound of her surprised cry lost in the noise of the waves. He concentrated on her, giving her all the pleasure she could take. Her eyes remained shut, her mouth opened and closed as whimpers of ecstasy escaped her lips.
He could remain here for eternity, watching her climax over and over. Applying just a little more pressure to her clit, he sighed as the walls of her pussy spasmed around him. Her hips jerked frantically, grinding against him as she screamed out her release.
“That’s it, baby.” He groaned and bucked his hips upward, spilling his seed deep into her clenching channel.
“Oh, Jaimee.” Her eyes snapped open and she stared at him in mortification.
His gut clenched at the mortified expression that crossed her features. She had to know deep down that it was him. He should tell her the truth. This was killing her.
Trembling fingers clamped over her mouth and her face flushed in embarrassment. “Oh, God. What’s wrong with me?”
“Nicole.” He tried to reach for her, but she swatted his hands away.
“You didn’t deserve that.” Tears were now streaming down her face. Ethan wanted desperately to stop her from running away, but she was too fast for him and quickly fled up the beach and back toward the cottage.
“Damn it, Nicole. Get back here,” he yelled, but she ignored him, never even looking back.

Nicole ran into her room and collapsed on the bed. Her body shook with uncontrolled sobs. That’s twice now she’d called him Jaimee, and what the hell was she thinking having sex with him again? She was so confused, her brain so fuddled.
Her door opened and she knew without having to look it was Ethan. He padded softly across the wooden floor and sat on the side of the bed, causing the mattress to sink on one side.
His hand rested gently on her shoulder and her heart ached. Pain clenched it like a vise as she thought of all she’d lost and the pain she’d witnessed in Ethan’s eyes.
“Nicole, look at me.”
She shook her head. She couldn’t. God, she felt like a stupid child. She was a mess emotionally and the last thing she wanted to do was hurt Ethan. “I loved him so much,” she sobbed. “And I never even had the chance to tell him.”
Ethan lay behind her, his arms encircling her waist and pulling her closer. With racking sobs, she turned and buried her face in his chest. He smelled of sea and sunshine, sweat and sex and she snuggled closer, allowing him to comfort her. His hands rubbed up and down her back, smoothing out her hair with gentle strokes and easing her tension-filled body.
He didn’t say anything, just held her, letting her cry out her grief.

The next morning, Ethan pulled pots from the cabinets as quietly as possible so not to wake Nicole. He really needed to tell her the truth despite what Brett said. Nicole was more important. Yesterday on the beach had really freaked her out. She was a mess, and he had to do something.
A knock sounded at the door. Agitated with the early intrusion, he strolled over and opened it. Brett and the doctor stood on the other side.
“Now’s not a good time.” Ethan started to close the door, but Brett stopped it and pushed his way in.
“Too bad.”
The doctor followed behind Brett and nodded a hello at Ethan. “You’ve gotten some sun, I see.” He looked pointedly at Ethan’s sunburned chest. “I thought I told you to be careful of that. It might have damaged you. Your skin is still healing.”
“Yeah, well. As you can see, I’m fine.”
“What the hell is with your surly attitude?” Brett asked.
Ethan sent him a glare. “I think you know damn good and well what’s with it.”
Brett’s gaze moved around the room. “Where’s Nicole?”
“Sleeping. I’m telling her, Brett.”
Brett removed his jacket and laid it across the back of a chair. “The hell you will. We’ve already discussed this.”
Ethan moved toward him, his anger rising with each step. “Your reasons are bullshit and you know it. If they were watching her they would have seen me fuck her on the beach yesterday. You don’t think they won’t figure it out?”
The muscle in Brett’s cheek jerked and his eyes narrowed dangerously. “What the hell were you thinking?”
“Me? I could ask you the same…” His sentence stopped the second he noticed Nicole step from the bedroom.
She tied the belt around her robe, then glared at the two of them with her hands on her hips. Her lips thinned into a tight line as she studied him and Brett. “Don’t let me stop you. Would you like to go out on the patio and duke it out or do you want to stop bickering and act like the adults you are?”
“We’re sorry we woke you, Nicole,” Brett replied with a charming smile that made Ethan grit his teeth.
Nicole crossed her arms and watched them warily. Her hair fell around her shoulders in soft curls, giving her an enticing “just out of bed sexy” look. Unfortunately, Brett noticed it too. Ethan wanted to smack that roguish grin off his face.
“What’s with the two of you? You were fighting the last time Brett was here.”
“We’re not fighting,” Ethan mumbled.
“It’s a difference of opinion,” Brett offered.
“About?” Nicole arched an eyebrow, her gaze moving back and forth between the two of them.
“Ethan disagrees with a strategy that I’ve insisted on.”
“Why do I have a feeling that there’s more to it than that?” she asked.
The doctor stepped forward, cutting into the conversation. “Ethan, I want to take a look at your skin, make sure you didn’t get too much sun yesterday.” He gestured toward a chair close to the patio doors.
Ethan sighed and nodded, only slightly happy for the interruption.
“There’s nothing more to it, Nicole. I promise.” Brett stepped forward and placed his hand on Nicole’s arm, leading her to the kitchen. Inside, Ethan fumed. He didn’t like Brett touching her. Actually, he didn’t like Brett at all. He wasn’t sure why, for he didn’t really know him. All he knew was that Brett was responsible for the mess he was in now.
He just didn’t understand the reasoning behind not telling Nicole. Was Brett being overcautious or was Ethan being unreasonable?
The doctor patted him on the shoulder, pulling his attention away from Nicole and Brett. “You look fine, Ethan. Keep up with what you’re doing, in moderation, of course.”
“Thanks, Doc. I do appreciate everything you’ve done.”
The doctor’s wise green eyes stared into his then he flashed Ethan a reassuring smile. The wrinkles in the corners of his eyes crinkled, surprisingly making him appear younger. “Hang in there. You’ll have your life back before you know it.”
“Will I?” Ethan turned to Nicole. She stood at the counter, a coffee cup cradled in her hands and a smile on her lips as she listened to Brett tell her about his job. Or would he lose her over this?
God help him if that happened.
Nicole glanced over Brett’s shoulder and caught Ethan watching her with the most gut-wrenching uncertainty in his eyes. What was the animosity between him and Brett? She wasn’t stupid. There was certainly more to it than they were letting on.
She moved her gaze back to Brett and smiled, but she really wasn’t certain what it was he’d said. Brett was a nice-looking man. He was tall, with beautiful hazel eyes and a very commanding presence, which made him appear even sexier. Definitely a man worth pursuing, unfortunately, she just wasn’t interested.
All she could seem to think about was yesterday afternoon and her encounter with Ethan on the beach. She’d kept her eyes closed the whole time and she’d swear she had been with Jaimee. Ethan’s touch, his voice, everything about him reminded her of him. And she hated herself for it.
It wasn’t fair to Ethan. He wasn’t Jaimee. Jaimee was dead. She’d watched them put his body in the ground. She’d touched him. She knew in her heart Jaimee was in that cemetery. So why the hell was this happening? Why was she so convinced something wasn’t right?
“Nicole?”
She turned back to Brett, wide-eyed and embarrassed. “Oh, I’m sorry, Brett. I’m afraid my mind was elsewhere.”
“I’m done, Brett,” the doctor said as he grabbed his bag. “His healing is coming along nicely.”
Brett nodded. “Good.” Looking at Ethan, he continued. “We’re close to finding them. It shouldn’t be too much longer.”
Ethan remained silent as he stood, his brows drawn in a pensive frown. “Just make it quick. I want this over.”
“I know.” Brett placed his hand on Ethan’s shoulder as he walked by. Leaning closer, he whispered something that made Ethan stiffen. What on earth was going on between the two of them? “I’ll see you again in a few days. Nicole,” he said with a smile.
She inclined her head in return, then watched in silence as they left the cottage. Ethan moved to the French door, his gaze glued to the pink sands just beyond the patio. There was something about the way he held himself that seemed familiar.
Stop it, Nicole. See him as Ethan, not Jaimee.
Setting her coffee cup down, she glanced at the food on the counter. Her stomach growled in response. “Wow, I just noticed you made breakfast.”
He turned to her with a look of confusion, then smiled. “Yeah, I had actually forgotten about it.”
“I feel terrible. I’m the one that should be doing this for you, not the other way around.” She broke off a piece of meat and placed it in her mouth. Chewing thoughtfully, she watched as Ethan made his way over to her.
He wore a pair of thin cotton pants in a shade of deep green, the elastic waist hanging low on his hips. His feet were bare and silent as they padded across the hardwood floor to where she stood at the counter. The pink that had covered his chest yesterday had been replaced with a light tan, giving him a slightly golden hue.
Wow, he looked good. Her heart jumped with the memory of how his skin had felt beneath her exploring fingers. How his cock had felt buried deep inside her. He came to a stop just inches from her and the heat of his flesh scorched hers even through the thin material of her robe.
“You had a rough night, so I thought I’d fix breakfast this time.”
She swallowed. “A man who can cook. That’s rare.”
He smiled, showing even, white teeth, and her stomach flipped. “I have many talents. How about we take our breakfast outside so we can enjoy the morning?”
“All right.”
Grabbing a plate, she followed him to the wicker table on the patio. A cool breeze blew, ruffling his hair, and she smiled, wanting to run her fingers through it again. It had taken her over two years to fully trust Jaimee but here she was with Ethan as though they’d been best friends for years, and it had only been a few days.
None of it made any sense.
For the first few moments, they were silent. Ethan pushed his food around his plate more than he actually ate, the frown on his face wrinkling his brow. Again, she wondered about the animosity between him and Brett. Is that what had him so uptight and quiet?
“Ethan?” He glanced up at her, a questioning look on his face. “What’s really going on between you and Brett?”
His fork hit the plate with a clang as he sat back in his chair. “You.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“There’s something I need to tell you that Brett doesn’t want me to tell you.”
She shook her head. “I don’t understand.”
“I know. And to be honest I’m not really sure where to start.”
“The beginning is usually a good place,” she suggested.
His gaze bored into hers. Uncertainty clouded his brown eyes and for a moment a sliver of apprehension snaked up her spine.
“In the beginning, I was in love with a beautiful woman. She was my world. But I had to leave her one night to take care of someone who needed medical attention, and on the way I witnessed a terrible murder.”
Nicole’s hands began to shake. Setting her fork down, she reached to grip the armrest of the chair. No. This isn’t right.
Ethan took a deep breath and continued, “I wanted to help Kimpak’s daughter but I was outnumbered. I thought the only thing I could do was go to Kimpak and describe them. At least that way they could find a way to track them down. But on the way out of the building I knocked over some boxes and they heard me. They chased me to my ship, then one of their shots hit the engine. I don’t remember a whole lot after that. I just remember waking up three months later and Brett telling me I had a new name, a new face and that I had to remain dead to everyone, including you.”
